BERKLEY, Mass. — A driver has died after crashing into a work crew truck in the breakdown lane on Route 24, and two others were injured in a secondary crash on the same roadway early Tuesday afternoon, state police said.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, a vehicle struck an unoccupied truck in the breakdown lane belonging to a nearby work crew on Route 24 south in Berkley, near mile marker 13.8.

The driver who died has not been identified.

A short time later, a secondary crash involving two vehicles happened before the fatal crash scene on Route 24.

Both drivers in that crash were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Troopers assigned to the Middleboro barracks, the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the Bristol County State Police Detective Unit responded to the scene.

MassDOT officials closed all travel lanes as investigators were on scene.

At this time, the left lane is open for travel around the primary crash scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
