HYANNIS, Mass. — Even with a little rain, the Fourth of July on Cape Cod was far from a washout.

Red, white and blue covered downtown Hyannis on Sunday, as both tourists and locals packed Main Street and enjoyed their newfound freedom from pandemic restrictions.

“After a very, very long, difficult year, it feels awesome to be out and about and see people and be apart of something,” said Kim Wojewoda, visiting from Connecticut. “This is our first vacation at all since 2019 so it’s really great to be here.”

Her son agreed.

“I’ve been looking forward to the fireworks,” said Luke Wojewoda.

There was no shortage of activities for families, with the boat parade, live music, and a fireworks show.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to see kids having a good time and families being together and uniting, and being able to enjoy the environment, the festivities, the restaurants; it’s just nice to see us back together again as a community,” said Marty Bruemmel, president and CEO of the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce.

Businesses reaped the benefits too, with some restaurant owners telling Boston 25 they were so slammed, they had to turn people away.

“Aselton Park was full of people, there was a lot of people here,” said John Palmer Jenkins, the owner of the hot dog stand John’s Dogs.

At 9 p.m., fireworks lit up the sky from a barge in Lewis Bay.
