BROOKLINE, Mass. — A 60-year-old security worker died after falling at The Country Club in Brookline overnight, just days before the start of the U.S. Open, authorities announced Wednesday.
Brookline Police and the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office identified the man as David C. McConnell, of Revere.
The worker, who is not a club employee, fell about 10 feet “at some point during the night and was discovered this morning,” the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
“Initial information indicates that he had been working an overnight security shift at the site,” according to the district attorney’s office. “Injuries and evidence at the scene suggest that he may have fallen from a decking area behind a tent that did not have railings present.”
“While the evidence available at this time is not inconsistent with an accidental fall, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has accepted the case and will determine the cause and manner of death,” according to the district attorney’s office.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is assisting with an investigation.
Beginning on June 13, the top professional golfers in the world will arrive at The Country Club for the U.S. Open Championship. The tournament will be contested from June 16-19.
“The Country Club is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred earlier today,” said The Country Club in a statement to Boston 25. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual and his family.”
“The USGA is terribly saddened by what occurred at our championship site overnight. This is an active investigation and we are working closely with local authorities to determine what happened,” said the United States Golf Association in a statement.
