BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — Authorities have launched an investigation after a Massachusetts Maritime Academy student was found dead in her dorm room Wednesday morning, law enforcement officials said.
Troopers responding to a report of an unattended death at the public university in Buzzards Bay just before 10 a.m. found a 22-year-old woman dead in her room, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois.
A preliminary investigation indicated no signs of foul play and no threat to public safety.
In a statement, Academy President Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald confirmed the death of one of their cadets.
“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I can confirm a cadet has passed away in our dorms. Until further details are available, we request that the privacy of the family be respected during this difficult time,” McDonald said.
There were no additional details immediately available.
Galibois is expected to release more information on Friday.
Troopers assigned to Galibois’ office are assisting with the investigation.
