HANSON, Mass — A construction worker was killed Wednesday when the foundation of a home being worked on in Hanson collapsed on top of him, officials said.
Emergency crews responding to a report of a person trapped in the rubble of a collapse on Dwight Street around 11:30 a.m. learned workers were digging to waterproof the basement when the foundation broke away, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced during a news conference.
After hours of working to extricate the victim’s body with airbags, Cruz announced that 51-year-old Gerceir Osvaldo Faria was removed from the rubble around 2:49 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
It wasn’t immediately clear how much weight fell on top of DeFaria.
The brother of Faria tells Boston 25 that he moved to Massachusetts from Brazil seven months ago and leaves behind two children ages 17 and 24 and his wife.
His brother says he called his family in Brazil every day and can’t comprehend how this tragic accident happened.
“I don’t know what to think right now, ya know. My mom and my brothers are in Brazil. Her heart is broken... broken, everybody,” said Elias Faria.
The investigation is active and ongoing by OSHA, Massachusetts State Police, and Hanson Police.
