HYANNIS, Mass. — Firefighters battled a multi-alarm fire at the Hyannis Harbor Hotel on Cape Cod on Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.
Emergency crews received reports of the fire at 213 Ocean St. around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The fire quickly went to 5 alarms by 3:50 p.m., fire officials said. Several area fire departments responded to provide mutual aid.
“Second, third fourth alarms were struck in quick succession after that, bringing about 50 firefighters and 10 separate fire departments to the scene,” said Hyannis Fire Chief Peter Burke.
The fire extended from the first floor up to the second floor and into the attic, Burke said.
The fire was contained to one wing and spread primarily through the attic area.
“The hotel has a series of wings, only one wing has been directly impacted by the fire,” he said.
No injuries were reported.
Wind gusts made it challenging for firefighters at the scene.
“The wind pushed the fire really up the exterior walls of the building, into the attack space, and then fueled the fire in the attic space which is why there are really some spectacular images from earlier in the fire,” Burke said.
Guests at the hotel were evacuated when the fire began, the fire chief said.
Burke said this is the third fire at this hotel in the past 20 or so years.
Another 3-alarm fire happened at the same hotel back in 2016.
The hotel, located on the waterfront in Hyannis, underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation recently on its existing building, according to its website.
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts said in a tweet that it responded to assist first responders at the scene, and adults and children who have been displaced by the hotel fire.
Molly Helides of New Hampshire was among people saddened to hear of the fire and subsequent damage to the hotel.
“I really wanted to get to the hotel to go in the pool, and turns out, this is what we got to!” she said.
