Court documents released on Celtics fan accused of throwing bottle at Kyrie Irving

BOSTON — A Braintree man accused of throwing a plastic water bottle at former Celtic, and current Brooklyn Nets star, Kyrie Irving, is scheduled to appear in front of a judge.

Cole Buckley, 21, who attends the University of Rhode Island, is facing charges for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after being arrested Sunday night by Boston Police.

URI spokesman David Lavallee confirmed Buckley is a student at the university.

“The matter has been referred to the URI student conduct process, which can result in sanctions ranging from a warning to suspension from the University,” Lavallee said.

Buckley is also a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the university, Lavallee said.

“The fraternity has a separate judicial process for any violations of fraternity membership standards. The case is under review,” Lavallee said.

A Boston 25 News crew knocked on the door to Buckley’s home, and relatives asked the crew to leave without comment on the charges he is facing. Buckley is one of seven fans in NBA cities cited for misconduct.

Last week in Philadelphia, a fan threw popcorn on Wizard’s guard Russell Westbrook as he left the game with an injury. A New York Knicks fan allegedly spit on Hawks guard Trae Young. In Utah, several fans allegedly racially heckled the family of Grizzlies star Ja Morant, and Monday night in Washington, D.C., a fan ran onto the court.

“It’s unacceptable,” said Wizards head coach Scott Brooks. In his comments following the Monday night playoff game, Brooks questioned what banning fans would do when they can buy tickets on the secondary ticket market.

The Celtics fan faces a lifetime ban from TD Garden, though Garden officials have yet to explain how that would be enforced.

Boston Municipal Court confirmed Tuesday morning that Buckley’s arraignment has been postponed to Wednesday, June 2 and that he was bailed out on a $500 bond Monday.

The court also released the documents to Boston 25 that include details of Sunday’s incident, saying:

“About 9:46 p.m. on 5/30/21 Officer Rooney…made an ABDW arrest as a fan threw a water bottle at Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving.”
