Christmas Tree Shops: List of stores closing, available discounts, when gift cards expire

MIDDLEBORO, Mass. — A going-out-of-business sale has officially commenced at all remaining Christmas Tree Shops store locations, two months after the struggling home-goods retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Shoppers can take advantage of discounts up to 50 percent off the lowest ticketed prices throughout the store, with all Christmas and other holiday items being 50 percent off the lowest ticketed prices, according to Hilco Merchant Resources, which is managing the liquidation event.

In a statement, Hilco said, “Find big bargains on all your favorite things…its Christmas savings in July!”

Select fixtures, furnishings, and equipment will also be available for sale in closing locations. New Merchandise will be arriving throughout the sale.

All sales are final during this store closing event.

Earlier this week, a report surfaced that indicated Christmas Tree Shops had defaulted on a loan that funds its bankruptcy.

The Middleboro-based retailer took out a $45 million bankruptcy loan but creditors moved to terminate the loan after the company defaulted on the terms, in part due to worsening revenues, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In total about 70 existing stores will close nationwide after the sales event, including locations across New England.

Stores in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia will also shutter when the liquidation ends.

Have a gift card to Christmas Tree Shops? You better act fast. On July 21, the chain will “cease selling and honoring” them, according to a filing in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

The first Christmas Tree Shops location was opened in 1970 in Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod.

Over the ensuing decades, the brand expanded across the United States.

Bed Bath and Beyond owned and operated the stores from 2003 to 2020 before selling all the locations to Middleboro-based Handil Holdings.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
