Chris Sale off IL, expected to make first start since June

The tax-free holiday in Massachusetts is this weekend but Sale Day came early.

The Boston Red Sox reinstated Chris Sale from the 60-day Injured List Friday and the 34-year-old lefty is expected to start against the Detroit Tigers, his first appearance since June.

The Southpaw made 11 starts with a 4.58 ERA before a shoulder issue sidelined him on June 1.

Sale, who signed a five-year, $145 million extension with the club in 2019, has made just 22 starts since 2020 as he’s battled various injuries.

He seemed to be returning to form in the three games immediately prior to his June injury, allowing just four runs and 13 baserunners in 20 innings.

Sale struck out 10 and threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in two Triple-A rehab starts before being activated Friday.

Lefty Pitcher Brandon Walter was sent down to clear a roster spot for Sale.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
