Celtics’ Grant Williams named First Vice-President of the NBA Players Association

BOSTON — A floor-spacing big man and versatile defender, Grant Williams has emerged as a key cog for the Boston Celtics over the past four years. Now the 24-year-old forward will spend the next four years helping to lead the NBA Player’s Association.

Williams was elected First Vice President by his fellow members of the union, the NBPA announced Saturday. The University of Tennessee product will serve a four-year term.

Williams is now the second-highest ranking member of the players union behind the New Orleans Pelicans CJ McCollum, the NBPA President.

Williams replaces Golden State’s Andre Iguodala as the organization’s second in command.

Fellow Celtics Jaylen Brown and Malcolm Brogdon also serve as vice presidents.

In October, Williams said his role in the NBPA played a role in his decision to turn down a contract extension offer from the Celtics prior to the season.

“It’s one of those things that you never want to take a bad deal for (anyone) around you,“The role that I play as VP of the Player’s Association, you understand where the league is going in the future and where the league is currently at. For me, it wasn’t a matter of life-changing money, it was a matter of value, not only for this year, but for years to come.”
