Caught on camera: Hammerhead shark seen hunting for fish near Massachusetts beach

NANTUCKET, Mass. — A hammerhead shark was spotted hunting for fish in the water near a beach on Nantucket over the weekend.

Video taken by Lisa Larson showed the shark devouring its lunch just feet away from the shoreline at Ladies Beach.

The shark could be seen thrashing around in the waves as it chased after the fish.

The predator ultimately vacated the area, leaving leftovers behind for a seagull to pick at.

There have been dozens upon dozens of shark sightings off Cape Cod in recent days, including more than 20 over the weekend.

July tends to be when great whites appear in large numbers as the Cape’s waters warm, with sightings peaking from August through October, according to Megan Winton, a scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

Beachgoers are urged to be most vigilant when swimming off beaches where the shoreline quickly drops off into deeper waters.

The recent sightings come as environmental officials in Plymouth warn boaters of breaching whales.
