SPRINGFIELD, Mass — A building at Springfield’s American International College caught fire after being struck by lightning Thursday.

No one was inside Courniotes Hall when it was struck by lightning, sparking flames on the roof.

The Springfield Fire Department tweeted that all companies responded to the fire.

While the school says there is “significant” damage to the building, the college says it will work to ensure students are provided “with continuity in their course studies in the fall of 2023.”

“AIC is known for its resilience and we will come back stronger than ever thanks to the help of our community,” the school said in a statement.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
