BROCKTON, Mass. — A 12-year-old boy at the Brockton Clubhouse of the Metro South Boys and Girls Club is proud of his new creation. He made his own video game.
“We’re supposed to learn how to make a game, like how to code, and basically learn how to add textures,” said Derek Bryant who attends an after-school class at the Club. Thursday was the last class of six and when they got to show off their creations.
Brianna Rodrigues, 11 years old, is making her own video game. And she loves learning.
“Basically, about computers and making games,” said Brianna Rodrigues.
Several Brockton kids are part of a unique after-school program that teaches them how to use software to make their own video games.
“Right from the very first class, they can see all the different possibilities of different styles of games they can make. It’s very exciting for them,” said Doug Tepe who is the Tinker and Create Instructor
This idea is the brainchild of Etay Armon and his wife who own Create and Tinker which is the company that teaches the classes. The couple’s goal was to specifically help young kids in Brockton.
“To give kids local kids here the experiences they haven’t had in STEM courses,” said Armon.
And that exposure is what is important for these kids.
“Our goal for our kids is really just for them to start thinking about what they want to do when they have the power to make decisions about the rest of their life,” said Monica Lombardo who is VP and Chief Advancement Officer of Boys and Girls Clubs Metro South.
And these are decisions that wouldn’t happen without an all-star donation by New England Patriot Trent Brown’s TB77 Foundation.
“The TB77 Foundation made that possible for this to be completely free-of-cost program for kids,” said Lombardo.
A program that opens their minds to endless possibilities.
