FALL RIVER, Mass. — The holiday shopping season is now fully underway. Black Friday was just last week and today was Cyber Monday. The Amazon fulfillment center is about a quarter of a mile long, making it the largest fulfillment center in New England.
On this Cyber Monday — packages were moving just as fast as the buying was happening. Katin Miller, an MIT graduate, runs the fulfillment center in Fall River. She says they can track every item in the 1.4 million square foot building through the entire journey. “Anything, everywhere we know exactly where it is,” said Miller. “As inventory moves through the whole building we know where it is the whole time.”
Miller says the global pandemic has changed how people buy especially around the holidays. “What has changed a lot is people buy bigger things online than they used to,” said Miller. Coming off Cyber Monday, Amazon predicts they will be moving 80-thousand packages a day which is twice as many as they usually do. “Every year is bigger than the previous year so these are record breaking volumes absolutely,” said Miller.
Miller says the staff in her building is about 1200 people — who have all been cross trained to so they can move to other stations as the work flow changes. But what impresses Miller the most — how it all comes together. “None of us speak the same, none of think the same and everyone works really well together,” said Miller.
