Bring your own bag: Stop & Shop to eliminate single-use bags from stores by July, charging for bags

QUINCY, Mass. — Note to Stop & Shop customers: Bring your own bag.

The Quincy-based supermarket chain is eliminating all single-use plastic bags from stores across the Northeast by July, a company spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Stop & Shop is committed to sustainability and helping to protect our environment,” the company said.

Also, Stop & Shop customers are now being charged 10 cents on all paper bags provided to customers at checkout, “in an effort to minimize waste and encourage customers to shop with reusable bags,” the company said.

Reusable bags are available for purchase at all Stop & Shop stores at various price points, as low as 10-cents per reusable bag, the company said.

Stop & Shop said it also offers reusable bags for sale where $1 from every purchase goes to a local non-profit.

Stop & Shop is the latest area supermarket to stop providing customers with free bags at checkout.

In 2019, Big Y supermarkets phased out plastic bags at checkout and implemented a 10-cent charge per paper bag.

Some other supermarkets, including Market Basket and Shaw’s, still do not charge customers for bags at checkout.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
