NEWTON, Mass — A bridge that carries traffic over the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton will be closed until further notice after it was struck by a truck on Thursday morning.
A truck with a pneumatic lift for a dumpster traveling on the eastbound side of the highway hit the Auburn Street bridge shortly before 10 a.m., according to Massachusetts State Police.
The truck’s lift was in the raised position, and it was sheared off when it made contact with the bridge, state police said.
Travel on the eastbound side of the highway has been reduced to one lane while crews work to inspect the structural integrity of the bridge. The breakdown lane is also closed.
All lanes on the northbound side of the highways reopened shortly after the crash.
“Be advised the Auburn Street bridge over the Mass. Pike will be closed until further notice,” Newton police said in tweet.
State police reported minor injuries in the crash.
The crash is under investigation.
