BOSTON — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is the most common cancer among women globally, according to the World Health Organization. Health experts say 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Self-exams, mammograms, and diagnostic tests can all help
Thursday, Boston 25 News spoke with the President and Co-Founder of Marisa’s Mission, Lauren Federico. Marisa’s Mission was founded in honor of Marisa D. Federico who passed away just a few hours shy of her 38th birthday in 2016, after battling stage 4 breast cancer. Marisa had a deep passion for helping others. She encompassed a unique quality that made everyone feel special. Marisa’s family and friends are honoring her legacy by motivating and assisting families affected by the numerous challenges of cancer. The nonprofit aims to help patients and families lessen their stress and financial burdens, so they can focus on their health and the valuable time they spend with loved ones.
Before she passed, Marisa hoped to start a foundation, but sadly never saw that happen. When her family held their first fundraiser, they thought they’d raise only a few thousand dollars and could help a couple of families. Instead, they raised more than $300,000. Since its creation, Marisa’s Mission has helped hundreds of families and given away more than $700,000.
Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic forced them to cancel their signature fundraiser, the Triple Crown Night, where guests don their best derby outfits, watch the race live, and then bid on auction items. They’re hoping they’ll be able to host the event again this May. During the pandemic, the nonprofit also saw a shift in patient needs. Prior to COVID, families applying for grants would ask for money to help with making vacation plans to create lasting memories. Now, the needs are to help with mortgage payments and monthly bills.
