BOSTON — Uniformed Boston Police officers fill Roxbury District Court for the arraignment of 23-year-old John Lazare, the Brockton man accused of shooting a Boston Police officer during a robbery in Roxbury Friday night.

The judge allowed the defense motion to have Lazare listen from a nearby room, out of range of our courtroom camera.

“The defendant stands before you charged in two separate dockets with a number of violent crimes,” prosecutor Erin Murphy told the court.

John Lazare now facing a series of charges including, assault and battery with a firearm, and assault with a dangerous weapon for Friday’s shooting that sent a six-year Boston Police veteran to the hospital.

It all happened Friday night at about 9:15 on Cedric Street in Roxbury.

The police officer was investigating the robbery of a pizza delivery driver two nights before on June 7th. When the officer arrived at the scene in uniform, another armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver was taking place.

Authorities say when the officer approached Lazare, Lazare shot the officer twice and ran into the building. The police officer was struck in the foot and the back.

A prosecutor said Lazare ran up the building stairs to the roof and on the way, dropped his gun, as police followed him.

“They followed the shooter’s path of travel up to the third floor of the building and out of the door to the fire escape and down to the roof. That’s where they saw the defendant running across the roof and demanded that he stop, that he show his hands, but the defendant ran across adjacent rooftops,” prosecutor Murphy said.

Police found Lazare in an alley, suffering from a leg injury, and arrested him.

Police say he suffered the injury when he tried to get away from police by jumping off a roof.

Days later, the Boston Police officers who filled district court were not able to get a glimpse of the man charged in the shooting, but they appeared here to show support for a colleague who gave all he had.

“This is what officers face every night that they go to work. The unknown. Ae they going home the same way came in, alive and healthy to see their loved ones,” said Larry Calderone, president of the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association.

Boston Police have not identified the police officer who was shot.

However, a spokesman says he is now home from the hospital and recovering.

As for Lazare, he is ordered held without bail pending a Dangerousness Hearing on June 23rd.
