Boston-area residents try to stay cool amid rising temperatures

BOSTON — The heat is on.

Boston Mayor Kim Janey declared a heat emergency in the city of Boston on Saturday due to an oncoming heatwave with temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s throughout the weekend.

The heat has also already led to one school district in New Hampshire, the Sanborn regional school district, to have early dismissal Monday and Tuesday due to the heat, the schools superintendent said.

Back in Boston, many spent Saturday hitting the beaches to stay cool.

“We had a great day,” said Micaelah Morrill, an East Boston resident who visited Constitution Beach on Saturday with her husband and children. “We got to play outside, and we took a little shade break when it was super, super hot out, just because we’ve got some fair-skinned buddies. But yeah, it was really nice. We love coming to the beach and are so glad it’s here.”

Revere resident Davis Ross told Boston 25 News that he and his friends spent Saturday playing a cornhole tournament at the beach.

“It is kind of hot, but after this week when it was cold and rainy, I’ll take this,” he said.

Janey, the mayor, urged local residents to take precautions and watch out for each other.

“It will be the first time this year that we’ve seen heat and humidity like this for an extended period. We are opening our cooling centers, so all residents have an option to come inside and cool off in air conditioning,” said Janey. “I’m urging everyone to take precautions and find ways to stay cool over the next few days. Please watch out for each other. If you see someone out in the heat, who appears in distress and needs help, call 911 immediately.”

To help residents stay cool, the mayor says there will be cooling centers opening at Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) community centers from Sunday through Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

There are also tot sprays that are open at parks and playgrounds throughout the city, but outdoor city-operated pools have yet to open for the season at this time.

Likewise, some indoor pools are available for lap swimming.
