Boston community celebrates life of slain college student through prayer, dance

BOSTON — A tremendous display of love for Kyre Ambrose, 19, could be seen at Lena Park Community Development Center in Dorchester Tuesday night, just days after he was stabbed to death inside his mom’s Brockton home.

Family, friends, and dancers from the Boston area joined together during this time of tragedy for a vigil.

However, the event included moments of dance and celebration to mark Ambrose’s vibrant life.

A fitting tribute since Ambrose fell in love with dance just barely after he could walk.

“Kyre lived his life to the fullest. He was himself. He fulfilled every goal that he needed,” explained Drake Anthony Curtis.

Kyre attended college to study dance in California before his death.

“He has always been a light from the second he was born till the moment he went away,” said Julianna Cumberbatch-Woods.

According to police, prosecutors revealed in court Monday that Ambrose was stabbed 28 times at his mother’s home in Brockton just before 2 a.m. Saturday while she was sleeping upstairs.

Investigators traced Ambrose’s death to suspect Jayden Fernandez. The 18-year-old pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in Brockton District Court.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office told Boston 25 News that the two men were acquainted, but they would not comment further when we pushed for clarification on how they knew one another.

At this point, Cumberbatch-Woods doesn’t want the circumstances surrounding Ambrose’s death to take away from the positive life he lived.

“I pray that in his passing that us as a family find a way to collectively honor his legacy, so kids in the future know who he was,” she explained.

Ambrose’s accused killer is being held without bail.

Fernandez is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on February 6th.
