BOSTON — Boston College announced Jeff Hafley as the football program’s newest head coach on Saturday.
Hafley becomes the program’s 36th head coach, after former coach Steve Addazio was fired earlier this month after seven seasons and a 44-44 record at the helm.

The Eagles finished their 2019 regular season at 6-6 overall, 4-4 in the ACC under Addazio. They’ll face Cincinnati on Jan. 2 in the Ticketsmarter Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama.
Hafley is currently the co-defensive coordinator for No. 2 Ohio State, and he’ll be introduced on Dec. 16 in his new position.
“Jeff Hafley was someone we targeted from the outset and we could not be happier to welcome Jeff, Gina, Hope and Leah to Boston College,” BC athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a release.
“Jeff’s shown throughout his coaching career he is a tremendous leader with high integrity and a gift for teaching. His passion, leadership and ability to recruit and develop student-athletes make him the right fit to lead Boston College to greater heights on and off the field.”
During Hafley’s first season with Ohio State, the Buckeyes jumped from 72nd nationally in 2018 to first nationally in 2019 in yards per play. The Buckeyes haven’t allowed more than 27 points in a game this season.
Hafley’s coaching career has spanned time in college ball and the NFL. He’s had stints at Worcester Polytech (2001), Albany (2002-05), Pitt (2006-10) and Rutgers (2011). In the pros, he was a secondary/safeties coach at Tampa Bay from 2012-13, and as a defensive backs coach at both Cleveland (2014-15) and San Francisco (2016-18).
