BOSTON — The Massachusetts State Police recovered the body of a missing swimmer in Hyde Park’s Turtle Pond Thursday evening.
That victim has been identified as 19-year-old Jason Peri Bonilla of Roxbury.
The State Police dive team, marine unit and air wing were all on scene, along with the Boston Police and Fire departments, on Thursday afternoon when officials responded to the pond for report of a missing swimmer.
According to police, Bonilla went to the pond with his friends around 3:30 p.m. Police say Bonilla, who was a good swimmer, may have used marijuana before swimming. They say he and one of his friends decided to swim from one dock to another across the pond. About halfway, he began to struggle. His friend tried to keep him above water but was not able to.
Police searched for several hours before finding his body at 7:45 p.m.
Police say Bonilla was living in Boston with relatives but his immediate family lives in Honduras.
State Police are responding to Turtle Pond in Hyde Park for a report of a missing swimmer. Boston Fire Department and Troopers are on scene. MSP Air Wing and Dive Team responding to that location as well. No further information is available at this time.
