Blake Griffin cites NBA legend as reason for unique Celtics number

Monday was Blake Griffin’s first official day as a member of the Boston Celtics. Boston will be the forward’s fourth NBA stop and Griffin took inspiration from another well-traveled legendary NBA big man when picking out a number no Celtic has ever worn before.

Griffin will become the first Boston Celtic to ever wear 91 when he takes the court this season. Griffin chose the number in honor of Dennis Rodman, a two-time champion with the Detroit Pistons who solidified his legacy as the one of the NBA’s greatest defensive and rebounding players when he won three more rings as the Chicago Bull’s starting center for the back half of their 90′s dynasty.

Aside from looking for championship inspiration, Griffin may have other motivations to wear 91.

In a 2019 interview, the six-time All-Star stated that he was compared to “a poor man’s Dennis Rodman” when coming out of college.

Griffin will become only the fifth player in NBA history to wear 91, joining Deividas Sirvydis, Ron Artest, Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Rodman.

Griffin averaged 6.4 points per game on .425 percent shooting as a member of the Brooklyn Nets last season and despite missing 26 games, still led the NBA in drawn charges with 26.
