BILLERICA, Mass — Billerica town officials expect to be picking up the pieces for the “next several days” after being battered with heavy rainfall from storms Tuesday.
Town officials say they received more than 100 calls for flooding in homes after 7.2 inches of rainfall downpoured on Billerica. The “unprecedented” volume forced the stormwater systems to overflow.
Several town and school buildings also experienced leaks in their roofs and foundations.
The mess will keep the Department of Public Works busy for the next several days, officials say.

Officials say that, while it is receding, Handel Road, French Street and Governor Hutchinson Road are still flooded. They are expected to become passable later in the day Wednesday.

Further south, the harsh weather formed a tornado in Mattapoisett that uprooted trees and scattered debris.
