Best hole-in-the-wall burger joint in each New England state

NEW ENGLAND — Whether you liked it plain, piled high with toppings, or oozing with cheese and sauce, burgers are a classic American food that most people love to enjoy.

You can find a good burger anywhere in the United States, but sometimes the best places are small, hidden gems that no one knows about.

Cheapism, a website dedicated to seeking out the best products and services at the very best prices, recently published a list of the best hole-in-the-wall burger joints in every state. These burger spots might not be the prettiest or most glamorous, but you’re going to get an amazing, inexpensive burger at any of them.

In Massachusetts, White Hut in Springfield was named the bucket-list restaurant. This white hut has been flipping burgers since 1939 with no signs of slowing.

“The beef is falling apart thin, and the buns are soft and griddled lightly on top for texture. Keep these classics simple with just cheese and grilled onions,” Cheapism said of White Hut.

In New Hampshire, Papa Joe’s Humble Kitchen in Milford earned bucket-list honors for its fresh burgers.

‘Skip’s Cardiac burger is a massive concoction of Buffalo and Cajun-seasoned patties, salami, cheeses, onion rings, bacon, and Creole mayo. If that’s not your style, watch for unique weekly burger specials in these humble surroundings,” Cheapism said of Papa Joe’s

In Vermont, The Shopping Bag in Burlington earned the top spot.

“You know everything is fresh because it’s the same stuff they sell. There’s no dining area, and you order at one place and pay at another, but it won’t matter once you bite into one of their half-pound beauties,” Cheapism said of The Shopping Bag.

Harmon’s Lunch took the top spot in Maine. This little roadside stand in Falmouth makes small and inexpensive burgers the same way they have since they opened in 1960.

“Get them “loaded” with sweet red relish, mustard, and fried onions. There’s only about a half-dozen tables, so eat up and get back on the road after a perfect pit stop,” said Cheapism of Harmon’s Lunch.

In Rhode Island, Crazy Burger in Narragansett lives up to its name.

“With ingredients such as a sesame wasabi rub, brie cheese, and a burger that’s cooked in a tortilla like a quesadilla,” these burgers are nothing but basic.

Lastly in Connecticut, Louis Lunch in New Haven is the “holy grail” of burger joints. Known for their hamburger sandwich, that has been made the same way since the 1900′s.

“The interior is still made of well-worn (and graffitied) dark wood and the burgers are still cooked in the same vertical broilers. The beef is cooked medium, then placed on toasted white bread slices with, cheese, tomato, and onion options,” Cheapism said of Louis Lunch.
