Bats found to be living inside New Hampshire elementary school

NEWPORT, NH — School officials in New Hampshire say the “bat eviction” process is set to begin after evidence of the flying mammals living inside an elementary school was found.

During an inspection Monday, Newport school officials say they found evidence of where bats were entering Richards Elementary School.

School officials say the bats were mostly forcing themselves inside the older part of the building through holes and gaps in the ceiling tiles and openings around pipes.

The school facilities workers sealed all the tiny bat entrances.

“No bats were observed during the inspection, which is not unusual since they often hide in small spaces and behind insulation while hibernating,” Newport schools said. “To address this issue proactively, we will be contracting with someone to look for any signs of bat movement. This will be happening roughly every 2 weeks. Also, our facilities team will conduct inspections to ensure that all ceiling tiles remain intact, and any damaged tiles are promptly replaced or repaired.”

The school is scheduled to reopen Tuesday.

“Looking ahead, we plan to start the bat eviction process in March. This process involves sealing off their entry points and installing a one-way exit door to allow them to leave without re-entry,” said Superintendent Donna Magoon. “Please rest assured that the health and safety of our staff and students remain my top priority. I will always err on the side of caution to ensure a safe learning environment. I will continue to keep you informed as we address this situation.”
