BOSTON — Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, the Boston Athletic Association will not be able to set a new date for the postponed 2021 Boston Marathon until the beginning of next year at the earliest, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The upcoming marathon, which was originally slated for its usual Patriots’ Day date in the spring, was postponed in late October. BAA officials had hoped to set a new date for fall 2021 by the end of this year.
“The B.A.A. will work with local, city, and state officials and members of its COVID-19 Medical & Event Operations Advisory Group to establish under what conditions the next live, in-person Boston Marathon can occur. Before the end of the year, the B.A.A. seeks to announce a new date,” the association said in October when initially announcing the postponement.

However, the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the late fall and early winter have led officials to delay that decision.
Yesterday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced that there were 4,060 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, with 80,620 active coronavirus cases and 342,764 total cases in the commonwealth since the pandemic began. Comparatively, there were 1,137 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 150,498 total confirmed cases of the virus in the state on October 28, when the initial postponement announcement was made.
