Authorities identify knife-wielding robbery suspect accused of wounding husband, wife in Salem

SALEM, Mass. — Authorities have identified a knife-wielding robbery suspect who is accused of wounding a husband and wife during a struggle in Salem on Friday night.

Eric Mackie, 25, of Salem, was arraigned Monday on charges including two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, attempted to commit a robbery, armed assault to rob, assault with a dangerous weapon, and violation of the city’s knife ordinance. A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

Officers responding to a report of an attempted robbery in the area of Dow and Park streets just after 8:45 p.m. learned Mackie unsuccessfully attempted to rob a couple at knifepoint, according to the Salem Police Department.

Mackie then allegedly ran a short distance, confronted another person, and demanded money at knifepoint. A struggle then ensued with family members who came to the victim’s aid.

During a struggle over the knife, the husband and wife suffered superficial wounds, according to police.

Mackie was arrested after officers found him being held down by another male, police noted.

He is due back in court in February.

An investigation is ongoing.
