BOSTON — Experts are urging parents to be cautious before jumping on the popular trend of sharing back-to-school photos of their children on social media.

The Better Business Bureau warned of scammers and predators who can use certain information to commit identify theft or earn your child’s trust.

Parents should refrain from sharing personal details about their children in back-to-school posts, such as full names, age, and height. Sharing the name of your child’s school, teacher, or grade level could make them a target for exploitative individuals.

The BBB advised parents to review their social media account’s privacy settings regularly and to be mindful of who can view posts. Experts recommend removing personal information such as telephone numbers or addresses.

Experts also asked parents to be on the lookout for phony friend requests from imposters who may be on the hunt for personal information.
