Another escalator at MBTA station reverses direction with passengers on it

BOSTON — An escalator at an MBTA station in Boston reversed direction with passengers on it over the weekend.

The passengers were riding an escalator at Chinatown station when it suddenly “malfunctioned and reversed direction from up to down,” an MBTA spokesperson said.

There were no reported injuries and the passengers safely stepped off at the bottom of the escalator.

“The escalator was immediately taken out of service, and remains out of service while the cause of the malfunction is investigated and ultimately fixed,” the spokesperson added.

In September 2021, nine people were taken to the hospital after tumbling down a malfunctioning escalator at Back Bay station.

On Tuesday, the MBTA announced that all new Red and Orange Line trains will be pulled out of service after an out-of-service car experienced a battery failure in Wellington Yard.

The announcement comes a day after new schedule changes have created longer wait times for passengers and a week after a scathing Federal Transit Administration report on the lack of safety at the MBTA.

Newly released video also showed a runaway Red Line train coasting through Braintree station as passengers waited on the platform.
