DORCHESTER — Alongside your zucchini and summer squash, a new product could soon be on the menu at your local farmer’s market:
Pot.
People at the Ashmont Farmer’s Market in Dorchester think that’s a good idea.
“So, having CBD or just THC products in general as a whole is much better if it’s much more open to the public,” said Evan O’Neal of Boston.
The push is from cannabis growers who are asking the state to give them permission to enter this new market. So far, legislators are only looking at the selling of marijuana seeds but the hope is once that idea has germinated other products will follow.
“Our district has worked closely with the Cannabis Commission in Boston so we tend to follow along their recommendations and policies so if they were open to the idea I think our Market would be open to the idea,” said Jeanne Dasaro who is Executive Director at Greater Ashmont Main Streets which runs the Ashmont Farmer’s Market.
The Joint Committee of Cannabis Policy heard testimony this week at the State House. The idea is not a bill yet as they collect testimony from growers.
Supporters say it would also allow people to buy safe products.
“Especially with and around drugs in general with buying them illegally on the street there’s a lot of stuff with fentanyl and other things inside of it so having it much more controlled and in a safer space for people is much better than,” said O’Neal
The idea also makes sense to the Executive Director of the Ashmont Farmer’s Market. She adds that even if the state approves it, community input is needed to give the final permission to sell at this market.
“I think some of the laws already say you’re allowed to have seeds in your home,” said Dasaro.
