Abington High School senior dies after being hit by Commuter Rail train

ABINGTON, Mass. — A high school senior was struck and killed by a Commuter Rail train in Abington Friday night.

A family member told Boston 25 that 18-year-old Katelyn McCarthy was the victim of a deadly collision involving a Commuter Rail train.

MBTA Transit Police said a crash happened in the area of the Birch Street crossing in Abington around 11:33 p.m. Friday. Investigators believe a woman was walking along the right of way when she was hit by a train, according to Transit Police, who did not identify the victim by name.

Police said the equipment at the crossing was working properly. They do not suspect foul play.

Abington Superintendent of Schools Peter Schafer sent an email to families on Saturday announcing McCarthy’s death in a tragic accident.

“Words cannot express our heartfelt sadness for all members of the Abington community during this difficult time,” Schafer wrote. “We are here to help our students and the community in any way possible.”

Grief counselors will be available to students at Abington High School in the coming weeks.
