DEDHAM, Mass. — The quick thinking of a Norfolk County Sheriff’s Officer and a neighbor helped save a Dedham woman in a potentially dangerous situation.
According to the sheriff’s office, an 83-year-old Dedham resident and client of the “Are you OK?” program, a daily telephone reassurance program to check in on individuals, did not answer her automated check-in call on Monday morning.
Officer Cheryl Bambery made several calls to the residence to no avail and grew concerned.
Thinking quickly, Officer Bambery called the woman’s neighbor, who is also a client of the program, and asked the neighbor to visit the woman.
“When the neighbor arrived, she found the 83-year-old very weak and unable to use the phone or move,” said Sheriff Patrick W. McDermott. “The woman was calling out, ‘I need help! I need help!’”
The neighbor called 911 and the woman was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. According to officials, she is now back home recovering.
“The ‘Are you OK?’ program is a proven lifesaver and I encourage anyone who could benefit from these calls to register with our ‘Are You OK?” program,” said Sheriff McDermott.
Norfolk County residents interested in signing up for the free program can call 1-866-900-7865.
An 80-year-old Canton woman was also rescued by the program in September, according to authorities.
