WORCESTER, Mass. — Through tears, Esther Mensah recalls seeing a 5-year-old girl and her mother hit by a car outside her store Queen Beauty Supply in Worcester.

Mensah says the little girl and her mother were shopping in her store on Stafford Street, and when they left, they were struck by a car while trying to cross the street at the crosswalk.

“After they left I heard a noise, so I came out here, saw that the baby was on the road and the lady was under the car,” said Mensah.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Witnesses say the mother was stuck underneath the car, while the little girl was found unconscious dozens of feet away from her mom.

“What I worry most is the baby, the baby, I was tearing and the mother, too, at the same time — that’s horrible,” said Rodney Boaboamah.

Boaboamah was one of a few bystanders who jumped in to help try to lift the car off the mother.

“We pull up and like six or five people came and we pull up the car. Once they pull her back and out of the car, I hold her head and put a bag there, so I made sure her head don’t get hit on the floor,” said Boaboamah.

Police say the mother has serious injuries but was stable, while the little girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Business owners nearby say it’s a dangerous street to cross.

“It seems like it’s a game of frogger, so it’s kind of like trying to get across as quickly as possible or hoping someone stops,” said Alex Valle, who owns Your CBD Store Worcester.

He hopes a crash like this sends a message to the city about making this area safer.

“It’s a matter of trying to I guess unite and try to see if we can get some flashing pedestrian crosswalks or maybe even a light so we can kind of slow down the traffic that takes place here,” said Valle.

Police say the driver who hit this mother and child stayed on scene, and so far no charges have been filed against the driver.
