BOSTON — Five people were taken to the hospital following a crash involving Amtrak trucks at a rail yard in Boston on Friday morning.
The incident, which happened at the Readville commuter rail station in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood around 4:30 a.m., involved an Amtrak infrastructure maintenance work group, according to Amtrak.
Transit police said that an Amtrak truck was traveling east on a section of track when it collided with another Amtrak truck.
“The collision caused substantial damage to the vehicles involved,” Transit Police Superintendent Sullivan said in a statement.
The five workers were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Video captured by a Boston 25 photographer showed a large gathering of workers in orange vests near the rail tracks, as well as Transit police officers and EMS workers.
Throughout the day both commuter rail trains and AMTRAK trains rolled through, the incident did not impact passenger rail service.
Readville station serves the Fairmont and Franklin-Foxboro commuter rail lines.
Back on site, as crews spend hours trying to move damaged cars, the Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the incident.
The Transit Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is assisting with the investigation.
