NEW ENGLAND — Five New England towns have been ranked amongst the best small towns in America, according to U.S. News & World Report.

For travelers craving a small town over a big city, the publication recently named Bar Harbor, Maine, along the Frenchman Bay the best small town in America during its 2023-2024 Best Vacations Rankings.

U.S. News & World Report wrote the following about Bar Harbor:

“Famously known as the gateway to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine, has enjoyed a centuries-long reputation as a scenic respite that combines all the best qualities of the state. Its placement along Frenchman Bay means that travelers are spoiled with soothing water views left and right, as well as craggy coastlines that look straight out of a landscape painting.”

Four other New England towns, including two in Massachusetts, made the top 25 list.

Nantucket was ranked 4th best small town in America being described as a “refined vacation destination.”

“Located about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this tiny island relishes its isolation, beckoning to the upper-crust prepsters and Northeastern bluebloods looking for a summer escape,” the publication wrote.

Martha’s Vineyard ranked the 18th best small town, sitting about 8 miles off the coast of Cape Cod.

The Vineyard’s “Hollywood East” reputation is going strong thanks to frequent visitors like former President Barack Obama, David Letterman and Bill Murray, among many others. But despite the all-star summer lineup, a laid-back lifestyle rules the island, according to the publication.

Now if you’re looking for a more affordable, mountain-style small town, consider the quaint Vermont village of Stowe ranked 19th.

“Tucked between the Green Mountains and CC Putnam State Forest, this classic New England town is filled with sweets shops and general stores, as well as charming churches and working farms,” wrote U.S. News & World Report.

Some might say save the best for last as Kennebunkport, Maine ranked the 21st best small town in America.

“Kennebunkport is simple, sea-centric bliss: a natural beach destination with miles of rugged shoreline dotted with summer homes and sailboats,” the publication wrote.

The 25 towns on the list have a population less than 50,000, plenty of restaurants, attractions, and “picture-perfect natural beauty.”
