New England is home to many of the safest cities in America, according to a new ranking.

With the United States experiencing over 500 mass shootings this year and the COVID-19 pandemic persisting, the personal-finance website WalletHub on Monday released its report on 2022′s Safest Cities in America.

In an effort to determine where Americans can feel most protected against life’s hazards, WalletHub says it compared more than 180 cities across 42 key metrics, including the percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and road quality.

Columbia, Maryland, was crowned the safest city in the country, narrowly edging out Nashua, New Hampshire.

In addition to Nashua, four other New England cities ranked among the top 10 safest cities:

  1. Columbia, Maryland
  2. Nashua, New Hampshire
  3. Laredo, Texas
  4. Portland, Maine
  5. Warwick, Rhode Island
  6. Yonkers, New York
  7. Gilbert, Arizona
  8. Burlington, Vermont
  9. Raleigh, North Carolina
  10. Lewiston, Maine

Worcester was the only Massachusetts city to rank inside the top 30 on the list, checking in at 28th.
