FALMOUTH, Mass. — A child was pulled from the water by a Good Samaritan at a Falmouth park on Sunday afternoon.
According to Falmouth Fire, crews responded to a reported drowning at Grews Pond inside Goodwill Park around 2:32 p.m.
“The initial report was for an unresponsive child not breathing who was pulled from the pond with bystanders performing CPR”, Falmouth Fire said in a release.
Upon arrival at the scene, fire crews found a four-year-old on the beach who was breathing.
Tatiana Rosa, a 10-year-old swimming in the pond noticed something under the surface.
“I’m like, ‘Is that a kid?’” Tatiana recalled. "
Tatiana told Boston 25 that she pulled the boy up out of the water and onto her shoulder.
She explained “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, are you ok?’ No answer. I put him on my shoulder, and I run to shore,”
There, Sean Cushing and others began performing CPR on the child. “I just took the little boy from him and started CPR,” said Cushing. “I was trying to remove the water and get him breathing again.”
Sean said with the collective effort of others, the boy began breathing again and was responsive. “It was a long three minutes,” he added.
Medflight was requested and the child was evaluated and stabilized and transported to an area Pediatric Trauma Center.
Tatiana’s mother, Malinda Vandersluis, also helped perform CPR on the boy.
She added, “I said, ‘Please God give him life. Give this kid life.’”
Malinda told us she is proud of her daughter and others who acted without hesitation.
She finished, “We prayed the whole way home. We’ll pray tonight for him. Our thoughts are with his mother.”
There is no additional information regarding the child’s condition.
There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the incident.
