4 New England landmarks named most beautiful in the U.S.

NEW ENGLAND — Road trip season is upon us, and when you think of beautiful places to visit you think of the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, and the Pyramids of Egypt, but the most beautiful might be right in your backyard.

According to a new guide by Trips to Discover, 4 New England landmarks made the list of Most Beautiful Landmarks in America.

Here are the landmarks that made the list:

Boston Common in Boston

Boston Common is the oldest public park in America, dating back to 1635. Located in downtown Boston, this park is filled with history. Today it is used for popular activities like rides on swan boats in Public Garden Lagoon as well as picnics and accessing the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail which begins in the park.

Portland Head Light in Maine

One of the oldest landmarks in the county this lighthouse was constructed over 200 years ago and lit by whale-oil lamps for the first time in 1791. Nestled on the beautifully landscaped grounds in Cape Elizabeth’s Fort Williams Park, the 92-foot-tall white conical tower is often considered a symbol of Maine. Visitors can visit all year long while picnicking in the park, or climbing the tower on Open Lighthouse Day.

Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut

Founded in 1929, Mystic Seaport is home to four National Historic Landmark vessels, including the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. Here you can get the chance to get out on the water and explore the historic Mystic River from mid-May through mid-October. The museum’s collection includes over 500 historic vessels and one of the largest collections of maritime photography in the country.

The Breakers in Rhode Island

The Breakers, is a National Historic Landmark and known as the grandest of all Newport’s mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence during turn-of-the-century America, was built as a summer home for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893. This home has over 65,000 square feet of indoor space along with a perfectly manicured 13-acre lawn overlooking the Atlantic.
