2 dead, 40 displaced after major structure fire in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — An early morning structure fire occurred in two mixed-use residential and commercial buildings that have resulted in two fatalities, officials say.

The fire broke out at 1283 Acushnet Avenue shortly after midnight.

The New Bedford Fire Department told Boston 25 that a total of 40 people have been displaced and that fire officials remain at the scene as they continue to examine the structure.

The identities of those deceased have not yet been identified. The Red Cross announced that it is offering financial assistance and long-term recovery services for those who have been displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New Bedford Fire Department, the State Fire Marshal, and Mass. State Police.
