EASTON, Mass. — An 18-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting at an Easton apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon left a 16-year-old girl seriously injured, officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect, Anthony Lopes, of Brockton, is facing charges including possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a loaded firearm without a license and possessing a large capacity feeding device without a license
Charges have not yet been sought against the suspect for the attack on the girl, however, there has been a “substantial collection of evidence,” including the seizure of two vehicles since the brazen shooting unfolded, Boone said in an updated statement.
Boone said one vehicle was recovered in Mansfield and the second in Brokcton.
Officers responding to a report of a shooting at the Avalon apartment complex on Robert Drive around 2:30 p.m. found the girl suffering from a serious gunshot wound to her face, Easton police told Boston 25 News.
“It was a horrific scene for the officers involved,” Boone said during a news conference after the shooting.
According to court documents, police noticed a group of men leaving the area, abandoning a black SUV that was traced back to Lopes.
Police later found Lopes near his Brockton home on Battles Farm Drive, walking with his right arm rigidly in his pocket. Police determined it was possible that he was holding a firearm.
Lopes got into another car with men inside that stopped just down the road. When police approached he began to run but tripped, causing a 40-caliber handgun to fall from his pocket. Police then placed him under arrest.
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital before being flown to a Boston-area hospital. Her injuries are considered life-threatening.
Boone noted in Wednesday’s update that the girl was in stable condition.
Witnesses at the scene of the shooting told police that those involved fled in a black SUV before officers arrived at the scene, according to Boone. Investigators also believe the shooting was targeted and that the victim and shooter are known to each other.
Lopes was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail. He is due to appear back in court in February.
State police detectives assigned to the Bristol District Attorney’s Office are assisting Easton police with the investigation.
