MARBLEHEAD, Mass. — The Marblehead community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old James Galante, who was killed in a crash early Friday.
Police say Galante’s car went off the causeway at about 3 a.m. When police and fire crews arrived on the scene, the car was found about halfway down the causeway, on the harbor side, with extensive damage.
Galante was a senior at Marblehead High School.
“On behalf of the entire Marblehead Police Department, I would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of 18-year-old James Galante,” said Marblehead Police Chief Dennis King. “This will surely have a great impact on our tightknit community and we are working closely with the Marblehead School District to ensure they will be supported in the coming days and weeks.”
“As the Marblehead community mourns the tragic death of James Galante with his family and friends, I would like to assure residents that our department’s investigation into this matter remains active and ongoing,” said Chief King.
“The members of the Marblehead Police Detective Division, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, are continuing their investigation to determine what factors may have led to this crash,” said Chief King. “Please understand that an investigation like this takes time and it may be weeks before a final report is complete.”
“It has been a tragic day for our Marblehead Public Schools family,” said Marblehead Superintendent John Buckley. “We extend our deepest condolences to James’ family and friends and to our entire MPS community. I have no doubt that our Marblehead community will come together to support the Galante family through their unimaginable grief.”
Counselors are being made available at the high school on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Boston Globe reports Galante was a member of the 2021 Marblehead High School football team that won the Division 3 Super Bowl.
The crash is being investigated by Marblehead Police and Massachusetts State Police.
