BROCKTON, Mass. — Mysterious drone sightings in the sky over Massachusetts have surged recently, sparking speculation and concern over who sent them and why.
Many Massachusetts residents have reported seeing drones flying over communities including Brockton, Boston, Harwich, Plainville, Lynn, North Grafton, and Burlington, among other parts of the state.
One Bay Stater shared a video of multiple drones buzzing close to their home in Brockton over the weekend.
“And, here comes another one. This is the 14th one tonight,” a man can be heard saying in the video. “It looks like two different flight paths each time they come by.”
A woman who lives in Burlington captured video of a drone from her bedroom window.
“First I was driving and I thought it was a plane, but it wasn’t moving,” the woman said in a message to Boston 25. “Then later, I saw it again from my bedroom window and filmed it.”
Another video shared with Boston 25 showed bizarre balls of light illuminating the skyline over Boston.
Additionally, two people will face charges after allegedly flying a drone too close to Boston’s Logan Airport on Saturday, according to police.
In a statement over the weekend, Massachusetts Gov. Healey acknowledged the bewildering occurrences.
“I’m aware of a growing number of drone sightings across Massachusetts and we’re monitoring the situation closely,” Healey said. “Massachusetts State Police is working together with local and federal partners, and they’re prepared to support federal authorities with jurisdiction over airspace.”
A Framingham resident shared a video of an unmanned object hovering over Bellingham, noting that it appeared “bigger than your average drone.”
A mother who lives on Cape Cod told Boston 25 that she counted more than a dozen strange lights in the sky over her Harwich home last week.
“Are we safe? I mean, what’s going on?” Lindsay Muto asked Boston 25 News. “I have little kids, so it makes us nervous.”
Muto wasn’t the only one to see them last week. Boston 25 News received similar cell phone videos from many viewers. In several of the videos, the person on the other side of the camera expresses a sense of disbelief.
Boston 25 News viewers also reported drone sightings in Revere, Methuen, Worcester, Whitman, and over the parking lot of a Target in Easton.
Similar drones reported in parts of New York and New Jersey have turned out to be “manned aircrafts that are commonly mistaken for drones,” according to Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
National security officials have said the drones don’t appear to be a sign of foreign interference or a public safety threat but they can’t say with certainty who or what is responsible for the sudden spike in sightings.
Sen. Chuck Schumer has called for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify the drones and their operators.
The FBI is among several agencies investigating the reported sightings, and it has asked residents to share videos, photos, and other information they may have about the drones.
