1 person hospitalized after the roof of building in Mass. town partially collapses

UXBRIDGE, Mass. — One person was taken to the hospital after the roof of a building in a town in southern Massachusetts partially collapsed on Wednesday night, officials said.

The collapse happened on the corner of South Main and Mendon streets around 9 p.m., sending bricks raining down on the sidewalk below, according to the Uxbridge Police Department.

Mendon Street at the intersection of Route 16 and Route 122 to Oak Street will be closed for the “foreseeable future” as inspectors assess the damage, police warned motorists.

The Uxbridge Fire Department said the injured victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.

Video from the scene showed the building roped off with yellow tape and a pile of dislodged bricks on the ground next to the Mendon Street Kitchen.

Police described the incident as a “roof compromise.”

The partial collapse happened as heavy rain soaked and flooded the area.

An investigation is ongoing.
