LAWRENCE, Mass. — A Lawrence teacher got the surprise of a lifetime when he was honored with a national recognition Wednesday.
He came to the attention of the Milken Educator awards for his science-themed songs and games that have helped inspire students.
So, on Wednesday, sixth grade science teacher Dan Adler was awarded $25,000 for his efforts in the classroom. And there was a pep in the step of students and faculty at Up Academy all day.
Each year, the Milken Educator Awards recognize up to 45 standout teachers from across the country who are chosen without applying and honored by surprise.
And “surprised" is exactly how Adler looked when his name was called.
“I had no idea,” he told Boston 25 News after the ceremony.
He may not have known, but students and other teachers certainly did.
“He is resilient, persistent and will do whatever it takes to ensure all scholars are ready for the world,” the school’s dean of curriculum, Amanda Forbes, said.
Adler was chosen for his leadership and his passion for helping kids fall in love with science.
But he is humble in the spotlight.
“This isn't all about me,” he said. “It's about the incredible work all scholars do in this building every single day."
And he credits the students and teachers for creating an environment he's inspired by.
