BARNSTABLE, Mass. — A man accused of killing a Yarmouth police officer serving an arrest warrant has been indicted by a Barnstable County grand jury.
Thomas Latanowich has been indicted on charges including murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, mistreating a police dog and armed career criminal.
Prosecutors say Latanowich shot and killed Officer Sean Gannon as he and his K-9, accompanied by a team of officers, attempted arrest him on a warrant. The warrant was issued after Latanowich missed a visit from a probation officer and failed to show up for a drug test.
Nero was also shot in the head, but survived.
Sgt. Gannon and Nero were both shot after they discovered Latanowich hiding behind insulation, prompting an hours-long stand-off that eventually ended when Latanowich called 911 and asked to speak with his ex-girlfriend.
Police say she came to the scene, and helped convince him to surrender.
