YARMOUTH, Mass. – Nearly a week after being shot, Yarmouth Police K9 Officer Nero has been released from the veterinary hospital where he was being treated.
The release is bittersweet for many, as it falls on the day his trainer and partner Sgt. Sean Gannon was laid to rest.
“We thank all of those who helped rescue and save this innocent animal's life---especially retired Yarmouth Police K9 Handler Peter McLelland, who entered the home after Nero was shot and has never left his side,” a Facebook post from the Yarmouth Police Department said.

Gannon, Nero and two state police troopers were serving a warrant in a Barnstable home when the suspect allegedly opened fire while hiding in an attic.
A bullet passed through Nero’s cheek and into his shoulder, but after surgery Nero was able to return to walking normally.
