BOSTON — The convicted child killer who murdered Jeffrey Curley in 1997 had a bid to change his name denied Tuesday.
The 10-year-old's killing gripped the nation, when it happened and during the trial, we learned what kind of monster Charles Jaynes was.
FOX25's John Monahan spoke with Jeffrey's father after the request was denied.
"He's as bad as they come - he's evil. He likes to hurt people. He enjoys hurting people,” Bob Curley said.
Jaynes was convicted of 2nd degree murder for his role in kidnapping then smothering the 10 year old with a gasoline soaked rag.
"At the time he murdered Jeffrey he had 75 warrants for his arrest. He had an apartment in Manchester under an alias,” Curley said.
Curley says Jaynes is a master manipulator and he's at it again.
Jaynes wanted to change his name but the request was denied by the Massachusetts appeals court. He said he is a member of the Wiccan religion and wanted to be called "Manasseh-Invictus Auric Thutmose V."
In an eight-page ruling, three appeals court judges rejected Jaynes claim to change his name for religious beliefs.
Judge Amy Blake wrote "In order to proceed on his free exercise claim, Jaynes must make a threshold showing that changing one's name is an important component of the Wiccan religion... This he has failed to do.''
Curley thanks the people opposed the name change and who wrote and called the court on his behalf, but even though this is over Curley says Jaynes and the painful memory of what he did to Jeffrey is never far from mind.
“Next we'll be dealing with the parole hearing, and if that doesn't go in his favor then he'll file an appeal, then another parole hearing. So it's always something, it's always something,” he said.
