Investigators identify driver killed in fiery crash at NH toll booth

BEDFORD, N.H. — A violent crash at a toll booth in New Hampshire ended in a deadly fire Wednesday, and investigators have identified the person behind the wheel.

Work crews spent Thursday morning working to make repairs to the toll booth and concrete barriers.

The lane remained closed.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Caleb Scofield of Bow, New Hampshire.

His cause of death was smoke and heat inhalation, thermal injuries and blunt impact injuries.

Witnesses said the crash happened so fast that it’s amazing no one else was hurt.

The crash and fire were so intense that investigators had to work to identify the driver, and whether the driver was a man or woman.

Witness video taken right after the impact shows the fireball engulfing the trapped driver.

The crash was reported at the Bedford Toll Plaza on the Everett Turnpike.

New Hampshire State Police said the driver tried to change lanes and either missed or overcorrected, causing the vehicle to crash into the Jersey barrier.

A witness who spoke with Boston 25 News was only a few vehicles away when it happened.

“It was insane,” Jordan Geoffroy said. “I had never seen anything like it before. I’m always on the road, but I’ve never seen something like that up close.”

The aftermath was so intense it took investigators hours to clean up.

They’re still trying to figure out why the driver made the lane change that led to the fiery crash with no reports of erratic driving ahead of time.

Most of the cameras at the toll booths only record license plates, but police are reviewing footage.

Any witnesses who haven’t already come forward with information is asked to call police.
