Ice hockey team dedicates practice to teammate diagnosed with lymphoma

Thursday night's hockey practice at Connell Rink in Weymouth wasn't just any practice.

Carly Silva's teammates dedicated their practice in her honor after Carly was diagnosed with lymphoma.

"[She] wasn't feeling good, went in a week ago," said Steve Buccigross, President of the Youth Hockey and Coach. "It’s tough news about one of their friends. They feel the way any of us would feel. She will be in the hospital for about a month, then her treatment will last two years."

Buccigross tells Boston 25 News Carly's diagnosis came within the last week or so.

A sixth grader at Abigail Adams School, Carly is best described as an active, happy-go-lucky girl.

"Carly is the sweetest kid you ever met," said Buccigross. "She’s an absolute sweetheart. Great soccer player, great hockey player. She plays for two of our hockey teams. She’s always got a huge giant smile on her face. Smile is pretty much permanent on her face."

Because she did want attention drawn to her, Carly asked us not to show her face.

All ice hockey teams across Weymouth will wear stickers with a green ribbon on their helmets in Carly's honor. In Carly's honor, her jersey was placed in the middle of the ice rink during practice.

Carly's hockey team is also asking everyone to send her Christmas cards at Boston's Children's Hospital in hopes of keeping the holiday spirit alive for one of their dearest friends.

Her mother and relatives are by her bedside at Boston Children's Hospital. If you'd like to help our Carly and her family, a GoFundMe has been set up to help with medical bills.
